Software evaluation guide
Free loan management software: compare the operating cost
Open-source loan management software can remove a licence charge. A lender still needs people, infrastructure and controls to run its book. Work out who will do that work and what it will cost.
Open-source projects to evaluate
Lokta is a commercial platform provider. We reviewed the project documentation linked below, but have not tested these packages. Check what each project includes, then try it with your own loan products.
Apache Fineract
A headless financial-services core with loan portfolios, accounting and APIs. The project publishes source and binary releases. Plan the staff interface and integrations around the core.
Apache Fineract project and releases · Source and Apache-2.0 licence
Mifos X Web App with Fineract
The Mifos interface uses Fineract as its backend. It adds a staff-facing application to that stack; it is not a second independent loan ledger. Check compatibility and the interface’s MPL-2.0 licence.
Frappe Lending
An open-source lending application built on Frappe Framework and ERPNext. Its repository describes loan operations and accounting; its licence file is GPL v3. Include those underlying applications in the deployment evaluation.
Hosted trials and free tiers
A time-limited trial or a usage-limited plan gives access on a provider’s terms. It does not necessarily include source code. Request the limits, renewal price and export terms in writing before loading an evaluation dataset.
For the files themselves, use the official loan-software download guide.
Compare the same costs over the same period
Choose a planning period and a portfolio size, then price the same work for every option. Record which costs recur, which depend on volume and which remain estimates. An internal engineering team has a cost even when its time does not appear on a software invoice.
| Decision area | Self-managed open source | Hosted trial or free tier | Paid platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software access | Read the project licence and release terms. | Confirm trial expiry, usage limits and the paid plan. | Agree platform charges and included modules. |
| Implementation | Budget for configuration, migration and integration work. | Test whether the trial includes setup assistance. | Specify deliverables, acceptance tests and any setup fees. |
| Daily operation | Assign monitoring, backups, upgrades and incident ownership. | Check what service continues when the trial ends. | Put support scope and operating responsibilities in the contract. |
| External services | Price payment, messaging and other service providers separately. | Check whether sample credits cover live usage. | Identify pass-through fees and integration charges. |
| Exit | Test export and restore, including your custom changes. | Export test data before access expires. | Agree data formats, migration assistance and exit charges. |
Add implementation, infrastructure, team time and support to your estimate. Include external service charges, upgrades and the cost of moving away later. Even with no licence fee, these costs need a budget.
Ask each supplier to separate product features from services delivered under contract. Test restoration from backup, support escalation and complete account export as well as the loan calculations.
Choose who will own the live service
With Lokta, the agentic loan servicing platform, you can evaluate Loan Management alongside AI Loan Servicing and RBI Model Risk Management. All three are available now for your post-approval book.
Loan Origination remains on Lokta’s roadmap and is not available now. Discuss pricing and the integrations your book needs with the team.
If you need to manage applications through approval, start with the free LOS evaluation guide. For a structured procurement exercise, use the LMS RFP toolkit.
Questions about free LMS options
Source access, operating responsibilities and when a paid platform may fit.
Is there free loan management software for lenders?
Open-source projects such as Apache Fineract and Frappe Lending provide source code under their published licences. Hosting, implementation and support still need an owner and a budget. A hosted free trial is a different offer with its own limits.
Are Mifos and Apache Fineract separate lending cores?
The Mifos X Web App repository describes a web interface using Apache Fineract as its backend. Evaluate the interface and core together, including their compatible versions and separate licences, rather than counting them as two independent cores.
Is Lokta a free or open-source LMS?
This guide does not offer Lokta as a free download or an open-source project. Lokta is a commercial platform; ask for the scope and commercial terms for your book. Loan Management and AI Loan Servicing are available now.
When should a lender choose a paid platform?
Consider a paid platform when you need a provider to take responsibility for implementation or ongoing support. Run the same servicing cases on each option and compare the full cost, including the work your own team will still do.
