Software evaluation guide
Free loan origination software: what to test before choosing
A loan application form is only part of an LOS. Before choosing free or open-source software, trace the documents, checks, lender decision and handoff into servicing, including who pays for each step.
Check how much of your application process is covered
Start with the steps an application must pass through at your lending business. For each option, check which steps the software handles and which your team would need to build or connect.
Frappe Lending’s application workflow
The official documentation describes applicant information, requested terms, supporting documents and collateral within a Loan Application. It also describes creating a loan from an approved application. Test that flow with the documents and approval steps your team uses.
Fineract with an application layer
Fineract is a headless financial-services core. If your shortlist includes Fineract and a Mifos interface, establish which part of the stack handles borrower intake, lender policy and third-party checks. Test the full process from the first application through approval.
Fineract’s published scope · Mifos interface and backend relationship
Lokta prepared this guide from project documentation; we have not tested these systems in production. Check the licence and required software for the release you plan to evaluate.
Test what the offer includes before pricing the gaps
| Stage | Question for the team or provider | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Application intake | Which fields, documents and journeys are supplied? | A sample application and the handling of missing or changed information. |
| External checks | Who contracts and pays for each service? | An itemised usage quote and a test of an unavailable provider. |
| Decision workflow | Where is the lender’s policy version held? | A proposed decision, the approval authority and a retained explanation. |
| Accepted terms | Which system owns the final approved terms? | A trace from application to approved terms, including a revision. |
| LMS handoff | How are failures, retries and duplicates handled? | One approved loan arriving once, with an exception owner for failures. |
Build the trial around an incomplete application, a changed document, a declined case and an approved case. Add an external-service timeout. Record who can resume each case and what the reviewer can see. Use synthetic applicants during evaluation.
For a self-managed project, estimate engineering and operating work alongside any licence terms. For a hosted offer, ask about application limits, user limits, trial expiry and the price after the trial. For a paid proposal, identify implementation, configuration and external-service costs separately.
For every step in your application process, record who supplies it and who pays for it. Include work left to your team and any implementation partner. Resolve missing steps before setting a launch date.
Agree the approved-loan handoff with the servicing team
Specify the borrower and loan identifiers, accepted terms, documents and effective dates that the LMS needs. Decide which system may correct each field and how the two teams will resolve a rejected event. Demonstrate a retry without creating a duplicate loan.
Save the data sent to the LMS and its response. The servicing team should be able to see which version of the approved terms arrived without searching through emails.
Lokta’s role starts with the approved book
For the book after approval, Lokta is the agentic loan servicing platform with Loan Management, AI Loan Servicing and RBI Model Risk Management available now. Loan Origination is on the roadmap and is not available now, so Lokta is not a current LOS option in this comparison. If you plan to keep your LOS, discuss what it would take to connect it to Lokta for servicing.
Continue with the free and paid LMS cost comparison for servicing, or use the official source guide to prepare an open-source trial.
Free LOS evaluation questions
Application coverage, trial limits and the handoff into servicing.
Can open-source software support loan origination?
Projects can provide application records and workflow foundations. Frappe Lending documents a Loan Application record and progression from an approved application to loan creation. Validate your full journey, integrations and permissions against a selected release before treating it as a complete LOS.
Does a free LOS include KYC and bureau checks?
Do not assume so. Software may expose an integration while the service provider requires a separate account, contract or usage payment. Ask who pays for successful calls, retries and test usage, and what happens when the service cannot respond.
Can I use Lokta Loan Origination today?
Loan Origination is on the roadmap and is not available now. Lokta’s available Loan Management and AI Loan Servicing capabilities concern the book after approval. Keep your current LOS evaluation separate from a conversation about that servicing scope.
How should we compare a free trial with a paid LOS proposal?
Use the same application cases and demand a written list of the trial’s limits. Compare the resulting paid quote, implementation work, external checks, support and data exit. Confirm what access will cost once the trial ends.
